Whitsunday Island, Australia — Day 61 of 138

The Whitsunday Islands are 74 continental islands of various sizes off the coast of Queensland, Australia, and protected by the Great Barrier Reef. The islands are a popular tourist destination in Queensland and for visitors of the Great Barrier Reef. The area is also one of the most popular yachting destinations in the southern hemisphere.

A large part of the islands is part of Australia’s national park system. The islands offer a wide range of activities including hiking, camping, diving/snorkeling and include accommodations ranging from luxury resorts to youth hostels.

Our stop today was at Airlie Beach, a picturesque beach town of approximately 1200 people. The town is filled with small shops, restaurants and pubs all with a beach flare. There are numerous tour companies offering day trips to other Whitsunday Islands and to the Barrier Reef.

We were only here for a half-day, so we decided not to take a tour, but to venture into the little town and explore on our own. We enjoyed a walk along the beach and stops at a local coffee shop. It ended up being a very relaxing day at the beach.

Our next port of call will be tomorrow at Cairns, Australia.
