Lisbon is the vibrant capital city of Portugal, located on the western coast of Europe overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It is known for its charming old neighborhoods trams, delicious food and rich history. Lisbon has inspired explorers for centuries with its stunning settings at the Tagus River’s mouth. The city prospered greatly from its trade and today’s streets are lined with the legacies of the wealthy builders.
We had beautiful late morning approach into the Tagus River and our dock in Lisbon. Here is a little of what we saw as arrived in Lisbon.

This is our first of two days in Lisbon, and it is the first time that either Kully or I have visited Portugal. Fortunately, our ship is docked in the heart of the city near a metro station and within walking distance of the city center. Today we decided to take a Tuk-Tuk tour of the city to see the highlights. Tomorrow will go back for a more in depth look at some of the sights we saw today.
Our guide, Juno, met us outside the Cruise terminal where we began our city tour.

After starting the tour, we made a stop to observe the cathedral of the cathedral and St. Anthony’s church located just across the street from the cathedral.

We made a stop at Miradouro das Portas do Sol, for a panoramic view of the city and the Afama neighborhood and the Tagus River.

Next, we Stopped at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, the highest point of the city for a180º view of the city of Lisbon.

We stopped and toured the São Vicente (St. Vincent’s) Monastery which is closely linked to the service of the Bishop of Lisbon. Sharing its Orago – São Vicente – with the Patriarchate of Lisbon, the building currently houses the services of the diocesan Curia and is the place where the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon governs the Diocese and welcomes those who seek him.

We drove through Feira da Ladra a popular used objects fair that takes place in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. With roots dating back to the 13th century, Feira da Ladra moved from place to place, until it settled in Campo de Santa Clara, parish of São Vicente.
Originally built as a church, the National Pantheon is a beautiful building that honors and keeps the memory of some citizens who served the country.

We passed through several old neighborhoods in the city and were fascinated by the beautiful street art.

From here we moved on to the modern part of the city where we passed through the major shopping, financial and entertainment districts of Lisbon.

We will remain in Lisbon overnight. Our next port of call will be on Thursday in Porto, Portugal.
